GEO (“Generative Engine Optimization”) refers to strategies used to prepare content in such a way that generative AI response engines (e.g., ChatGPT, Perplexity, Bing/Google AI) can find, understand, and cite it more easily in their responses.
Unlike traditional SEO, the focus is less on rankings in results lists and more on the likelihood of serving as a source in a directly formulated AI response. Typical measures: clearly structured, precise, and quotable content (FAQs, summaries, tables), clean metadata/Schema.org markups, unique entities, and documented original data including source references and usage rights. The goal is greater visibility, attribution, and traffic from AI-generated responses.
